‘KWSB needs more time to draw water contingency plan’

Published on: April 10, 2017 6:48 AM

KARACHI: Failing to comply with the orders of Chief Minister Sindh the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board KWSB has sought more time to prepare “foolproof” water contingency plan to streamline regular supply of water in the city during summer.

Talking to Daily Times, Zafar Palejo, Chief Engineer (Bulk) KWSB said that the plan requires more time and all efforts are being taken to make it foolproof by all means.

Chief Minister (CM), Sindh Murad Ali Shah had directed MD KWSB to prepare a water contingency plan by first week of April 2017.

“We are gathering details from 6 Superintending Engineers and 36 Executive Engineers of all six districts in order to keep drinking water supply to citizens of all districts during summer”, Palejo said.

MD KWSB has suggested that after the completion of water contingency plan, the entity would inform citizens through print and electronic media, Palejo stated.

The water level is decreasing gradually at Dhabeji Pumping Station, thus resulting less water supply through the system, he informed.

Moreover, frequent power fluctuations and disruption at the Dhabeji Pumping Station coupled with around 50 percent less supply of water from Hub Dam (from 100 million gallon per day (mgd) to 51 mgd can be attributed to the shortage of water supply in Karachi, he opined.

After the water contingency plan, the entity would revisit the system of water supply in city besides keep the areas facing water crises on priority, he informed.

In this connection, Chief Secretary Sindh has also asked entity to firmly follow CM’s directives in order to avert water shortage during summer.

“We are taking measures to supply 50 MGD to 100 MGD of water to Katchi abadis, Hub area, Baldia and Orangi Town, as these localities are more water-affected, he said.
