GUJRANWALA: The annual performance of district police improved during 2017. The performance of the Punjab Police is already being questioned for missing targets of arresting proclaimed offenders, people wanted under Fourth Schedule and the rise ratio of pending cases. Citizens said that police had failed to control law and order despite receiving enhanced annual budgets, supplementary grants, and special funds. According to crime diary provided by police department during campaign against criminals, they busted 80 gangs and recovered 52.176 kg heroin, 914 kg charras, 37 kg opium and 21,409 bottles of liquor. Gujranwala Police also seized a total 1,979 weapons, including 126 rifles, 155 guns, 1,555 pistols, 13 carbines, 35 kalashnikovs and thousands of bullets. The figures were provided by police department. Citizens, however, claimed that the actual figures were much higher. A considerable number of affected citizens did not approach police or their cases were not registered with police. The citizens demanded a more effective security policy. Labourers injured: Three laborers received burn injuries in result of compressor blast in a furnace factory. The laborers were busy working in steel furnace when a compressor exploded. Resultantly, Abdullah, Qadir and Manzoor received burn injuries and were rushed to DHQ Hospital. Woman injured: A husband allegedly forced his wife to drink acid over a domestic dispute in Khanpur. Sobia’s family said that Mureed Hussain poured acid down her throat and then dropped her at her parents’ home from where she was shifted to DHQ hospital. Human traffickers arrested: FIA teams arrested nine human traffickers from Gujranwala, Gujrat, Mandi Bahaud Din and Wazirabad on Saturday. FIA officials said that accused Khalid Mehmood, Muhammad sohail, Muhammad Youasf, Rana Amir, Yousaf, Rehmat, Muhammad Qasim and Muhammad Tanvir were involved in sending people illegally abroad. They were wanted for the last five years. Road accident: A young man died in a road accident in Rahwali on Saturday. Yasir, a resident of Mujahidpura, was crossing the road when a truck crushed him to death. Rescue 1122 shifted the body to the DHQ hospital. Published in Daily Times, January 7th 2018.
