ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) on Saturday decided to move the Supreme Court against the military courts.
The PBC decided this during a meeting chaired by PBC Vice Chairman Ahsan Bhoon. Later, talking to reporters, Bhoon said that the council would soon move a petition under Article 184 (3), the original jurisdiction, to challenge the extension of military courts. Rejecting the two-year extension in the courts tenure, he added that 23rd Amendment not only curtailed the fundamental rights but also against the independence of judiciary.
A day ago, the Supreme Court Bar Association, had also challenged the extension of military courts in the SC.
Meanwhile, the PBC meeting condemned the lynching of student Mashal Khan in Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan.
The council demanded that the government hold a judicial inquiry into the incident. The council also appointed Yousaf Leghari as its representative for the Judicial Commission of Pakistan on judges’ appointment. Leghari would assume the charge on May 19.
The PBC also appointed Hafeezur Rehman as Executive Committee chairman, Azam Nazeer Tarar as Legal Education Committee chairman, Abdul Fayyaz as Finance Committee chairman and Sher Khan as Rules Committee chairman.
