LAHORE: Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Thursday that the Model Town incident was a tragic one. Talking to reporters in London, the Punjab chief minister said that he himself had ordered an investigation into the incident. “I announced to constitute a commission the same day. I held a press conference on June 17, 2014 and requested the Lahore High Court chief justice to set up a judicial commission to investigate the incident,” the CM said. “Our sympathies are with the heirs of the martyrs. However, there should be no politics over dead bodies,” he said. The Model Town incident had occurred on June 17, 2014, when police had launched an operation to remove the barriers from the road leading to the offices of Minhajul Quran and the residence of Pakistan Awami Tehreek founder Muhammad Tahirul Qadri in Model Town. During the ensuing clashes between protesters and police, dozens of people were killed and around a hundred were injured. To a question on Thursday, the CM said that the Orange Line Metro Train project had remained on stay order for 22 months. “Some elements created hurdles in this important project for their personal interests,” he said. To a question, the chief minister said that there were differences on FATA reforms as the 70-year history of FATA was being changed. CM condoles: Chief Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday condoled the death of daughter-in-law of Nawab Iftikhar Hussain Khan Mamdot, former governor Sindh. He also condoled the death of Tahir Chughtai, brother of Prof Akhtar Sohail Chughtai, CEO of Chughtai Lab. In separate messages of condolence, the chief minister prayed to Almighty Allah to rest the departed souls in peace and grant courage and solace to the bereaved families to bear the loss with equanimity.
