Yemen’s Houthis threaten maritime blockade of Saudi Arabia

Published on: July 20, 2026 6:25 PM

Yemen’s Houthi group, Ansar Allah, announced a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia, increasing tensions in the region. The group said the decision was a response to what it described as Saudi restrictions on Yemen. The announcement raised concerns over regional maritime security.

According to Houthi spokespersons, the group has declared a blockade against Saudi maritime routes. They said the move was linked to Saudi Arabia’s alleged blockade of Yemen. No independent confirmation of the announced blockade was immediately available.

The announcement follows recent accusations by the Houthis that Saudi Arabia carried out airstrikes on Sanaa airport. The group had warned of retaliation after making the claims. Saudi authorities have not confirmed the allegations.

Meanwhile, the Houthis previously launched missile attacks toward Saudi Arabia, which were intercepted, according to reports. The latest statement marks another escalation between the Yemeni group and Riyadh. Regional governments continue monitoring the situation.

The developments come amid wider tensions involving Iran, Saudi Arabia, and other regional actors. Therefore, any disruption to maritime routes could affect security and trade across the Red Sea and Gulf regions. International observers are closely following the situation.

Additionally, Saudi Arabia remains a key regional partner for several countries, including Pakistan. Officials have expressed concerns over attacks targeting Saudi territory. Governments have called for protecting regional stability and avoiding further escalation.

The Houthi announcement adds to ongoing security challenges in the Middle East. Meanwhile, further developments may depend on responses from Saudi Arabia and other regional stakeholders. Authorities continue assessing potential impacts on maritime activities.
