Sindh announces public holidays for Ashura on June 25 and 26

Published on: June 22, 2026 2:59 PM

The Sindh government has declared public holidays on June 25 and 26, 2026, in connection with Ashura, according to an official notification issued on Monday.

The announcement was shared by the Sindh Information Department on the social media platform X, confirming that the holidays will be observed across the province on Thursday and Friday, corresponding to Muharram 9 and 10, 1448 AH.

According to the notification issued by the chief secretary of Sindh, all government offices, autonomous bodies, semi-autonomous organisations, corporations and local councils under the provincial administration will remain closed during the two-day holiday period. However, essential services will continue to operate as usual.

Ashura is observed on the 10th of Muharram and holds deep religious significance, particularly for Shia Muslims around the world. The day commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Husain (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), along with his companions in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD.

The broader month of Muharram is a period of mourning, reflection and religious observance for many Muslims, with processions, gatherings and prayers held in various parts of the country.

Authorities typically implement security and administrative arrangements during Muharram to facilitate processions and ensure public safety, especially in major cities where large congregations are expected.

The Sindh government’s decision aligns with annual practice, allowing citizens to observe religious rituals and participate in commemorative events associated with Ashura.

Officials have advised the public to follow any additional guidelines issued by local administrations during the holiday period to ensure smooth observance of religious gatherings and maintain law and order across the province.
