NEW YORK: Former Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Afridi visited the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Wednesday and commended Pakistan’s diplomatic mission for its efforts in promoting dialogue, multilateral cooperation and the peaceful resolution of disputes.

According to a statement issued by Pakistan’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, Afridi visited the UN headquarters at the invitation of Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad.

During the visit, Ambassador Ahmad briefed the former cricketer on Pakistan’s engagement at the United Nations, including its role in advancing multilateralism, encouraging diplomacy and contributing to international peace and security.

The mission said Afridi appreciated Pakistan’s constructive efforts at the global forum and acknowledged its role in fostering understanding, dialogue and cooperation among nations while advocating the peaceful settlement of disputes.

Afridi was also given a tour of the UN headquarters and received briefings on the organisation’s work in promoting global peace, security, sustainable development and international collaboration.

During their meeting, Ambassador Ahmad praised Afridi for his contributions to Pakistan cricket and his popularity among cricket fans worldwide. He also acknowledged the former captain’s humanitarian and welfare initiatives, noting that his charitable work has positively affected many people, particularly in underserved communities.

The ambassador highlighted the significance of sports as a tool of diplomacy, describing it as a powerful means of bringing people together, strengthening mutual understanding and promoting goodwill among nations.

In a post shared on social media platform X, Afridi thanked Ambassador Ahmad and the Pakistani mission for their hospitality. He said it was a privilege to discuss Pakistan’s role on the global stage and opportunities to enhance the country’s positive international impact.

Afridi, popularly known as “Boom Boom,” represented Pakistan in 398 One-Day Internationals, 99 Twenty20 Internationals and 27 Test matches before retiring from international cricket in 2017. He continues to remain active in philanthropy through the Shahid Afridi Foundation.
