Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to accelerate work on a 100-megawatt solar power project in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), calling for its early completion to ensure improved and sustainable electricity supply in the region.

Chairing a review meeting in Islamabad on Tuesday, the prime minister instructed officials to speed up implementation of the project and emphasized the need for independent third-party validation to ensure transparency at every stage of development. According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the federal government will bear the full cost of the initiative.

During the briefing, officials informed the meeting about ongoing solar energy initiatives in the region, including an 18MW solarisation project for government buildings across Gilgit and Diamer divisions. This project is expected to be completed by December, while similar work in the Baltistan division is targeted for completion by October.

The meeting was also told that work is underway on an 82MW solar energy project designed to provide electricity to households in Gilgit, Skardu, Chilas and Khaplu. Together with the government buildings initiative, these projects form part of a broader strategy to shift the region towards renewable and reliable energy sources.

Officials noted that the 100MW solar project had already been approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) in August 2025 and was subsequently formally endorsed by the prime minister in December. The project aims to provide uninterrupted, affordable and environmentally sustainable power to a region that has long faced energy shortages and infrastructure constraints.

The prime minister reiterated that timely completion of energy projects in remote and mountainous regions remains a key priority for the federal government. He stressed that transparency, efficiency and quality execution must be ensured throughout the implementation process.

Once completed, the solar power initiative is expected to significantly reduce dependence on expensive fuel-based electricity generation and improve energy access for both public institutions and households across Gilgit-Baltistan
