An interesting political contradiction has emerged in Sindh, where opposition parties continue to level strong criticism against the provincial government and its institutions, while elected local government representatives from the same parties have formally praised the performance of a key Sindh government agency.
Despite persistent criticism of the Sindh government and its departments by opposition leaders, elected representatives from several Karachi towns have issued written commendations acknowledging the performance of the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) during the Eid-ul-Azha 2026 cleanliness operation.
Appreciation letters and certificates issued by officials and chairmen of Baldia Town, Shah Faisal Town, Korangi Town and Landhi Town described the board’s performance as exemplary. The letters stated that animal waste was collected, transported and disposed of in a timely manner, while cleanliness arrangements were carried out effectively throughout the Eid holidays.
Landhi Town Chairman Abdul Jameel Khan, affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami, termed the sanitation arrangements satisfactory and, in a letter addressed to the Managing Director of SSWMB, acknowledged the board’s full cooperation during the operation.
Similarly, Shah Faisal Town Chairman Syed Muhammad Mureed Kazim, associated with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), praised the board in a letter for the prompt removal of offal and for helping keep the area free from foul odours during Eidul Azha.
Baldia Town Chairman Abdul Kareem Askani of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) described the cleanliness drive as exceptional and appreciated the efforts of the relevant officers and staff. A commendation letter from Korangi Town also noted that all promised resources had been provided and that animal waste was disposed of on time.
The letters have attracted attention in political circles because they present a contrast to the stance taken by the senior leadership of several opposition parties. While opposition leaders have criticised the Sindh government’s performance, some elected local representatives from the same parties have formally acknowledged and appreciated the services delivered by a Sindh government institution in their respective areas.
During the Eid holidays, Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan chief Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, through a press conference, and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), through an official statement, described the SSWMB’s offal collection operation as unsuccessful.
When contacted, SSWMB Managing Director Tariq Nizamani said the Eid-ul-Azha operation had been made successful through improved planning and strategy. He claimed that the board had managed to save public funds compared to last year’s operation.
Nizamani further stated that chairmen of New Karachi Town and Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town, both affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami, had also appreciated the board’s performance and acknowledged that sanitation and cleanliness arrangements had been carried out effectively.
