ISPR says Field Marshal’s Iran visit nears key breakthrough

Published on: May 23, 2026 8:59 PM

Inter-Services Public Relations said Chief of Defence Forces and Army Chief Asim Munir made “encouraging progress” during intensive negotiations with Iranian leadership in Tehran. The talks focused on de-escalation efforts and advancing mediation initiatives linked to rising regional tensions. According to the military’s media wing, the discussions contributed positively toward reaching a final understanding.

The ISPR stated that the engagements were conducted in a constructive and positive environment over the past 24 hours. Discussions reportedly centred on accelerating consultations aimed at promoting peace, stability, and a conclusive agreement in the region. The latest diplomatic contacts come amid sensitive negotiations involving the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions relief, and security guarantees.

During the visit, Field Marshal Asim Munir held meetings with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni. Iranian officials also appreciated Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue and supporting peaceful solutions to regional disputes.

Pakistan has recently intensified diplomatic efforts to help break the deadlock surrounding the Iran crisis. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also visited Tehran twice within a week to support ongoing negotiations. Meanwhile, regional diplomatic activity expanded further after Qatar dispatched a negotiating delegation to Tehran in coordination with the United States.

The latest developments come as Washington and its regional allies increase pressure for a diplomatic resolution. Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described Pakistan as America’s “primary interlocutor” in the talks and praised Islamabad’s mediation role. Analysts believe the current process increasingly resembles a phased stabilisation effort rather than negotiations for a broader long-term settlement.
