Narendra Modi and Marco Rubio discussed strengthening bilateral relations during a meeting in New Delhi on Saturday. The talks focused on strategic cooperation, regional security, trade, and critical technologies. Rubio’s visit comes as Washington seeks to stabilise ties with India after months of trade tensions.
Following the meeting, Modi said both countries reviewed progress in the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. He added that New Delhi and Washington would continue working closely for global peace and stability. Meanwhile, US Ambassador Sergio Gor described the discussions as productive and emphasised cooperation in defence, security, and technology sectors.

Gor also confirmed that Rubio extended an invitation from President Donald Trump for Modi to visit the White House in the near future. According to India’s Prime Minister’s Office, Rubio also shared Washington’s perspective on developments in the Middle East and broader global security concerns during the discussions.
Rubio’s four-day visit will include meetings with Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and participation in the upcoming Quad summit involving India, Japan, Australia, and the United States. The Quad alliance was formed to support a free and open Indo-Pacific region amid growing geopolitical competition with China. Rubio also visited the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata and paid tribute to Mother Teresa during his trip.

Despite efforts to strengthen relations, analysts say challenges remain over trade disputes and shifting regional alliances. The Trump administration’s tariffs on Indian goods and Washington’s growing engagement with Pakistan have caused concern in New Delhi. However, both governments continue seeking cooperation on energy security, defence ties, and Indo-Pacific strategy as they work to rebuild momentum in the partnership.
