Spotify launches AI music tool through major label deal

Published on: May 22, 2026 6:40 PM

Spotify has announced a major partnership with Universal Music Group that introduces new AI-powered tools allowing users to create covers and remixes of songs. The feature will be available exclusively to Premium subscribers and marks a significant shift in how fans interact with music on streaming platforms.

The upcoming tool will enable users to generate AI-driven versions of existing tracks through a controlled and licensed system designed to protect artists’ rights. Moreover, Spotify confirmed that participating artists will receive revenue shares whenever their work is used in AI-generated music, ensuring compensation alongside fan-driven creativity.

Spotify stated that the feature will roll out as a paid add-on for Premium users, although pricing and an official launch date have not yet been disclosed. In addition, the company emphasized that artists will have full control over whether they choose to allow their music to be used in AI-generated content.

The development reflects Spotify’s broader strategy to integrate artificial intelligence into music creation while maintaining legal compliance through licensing agreements with major record labels. Furthermore, the company is working with multiple industry players, including Sony Music Group and Warner Music Group, to expand AI-driven creative tools responsibly.

Spotify co-CEO Alex Norström said the initiative is built on principles of consent, credit and compensation for artists and songwriters, aiming to balance innovation with fair industry practices. Meanwhile, Universal Music Group CEO Sir Lucian Grainge said the collaboration could strengthen fan engagement and create new revenue opportunities for artists worldwide.

The announcement was made during Spotify’s Investor Day, where the company also revealed additional AI features such as audiobook generation tools, podcast production assistance and concert ticket access for top fans. Industry observers believe the move could reshape digital music creation while reducing legal disputes surrounding AI-generated content.
