Fresh monsoon spell triggers flood alerts across Pakistan

Published on: July 12, 2026 12:27 PM

A fresh monsoon system has entered Pakistan, bringing widespread rain and thunderstorms to many regions while ending the recent heatwave in several cities. Heavy showers fell across Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore and other parts of Punjab, lowering temperatures and improving weather conditions. However, authorities also warned that the new spell could increase the risk of flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.

Moreover, rainfall continued in Gujrat, Hafizabad, Daska and Wazirabad, where several roads and low-lying neighbourhoods experienced water accumulation after intense downpours. Urban flooding affected parts of Gujrat as drainage systems struggled to handle the heavy rain, highlighting the need for precautionary measures during the ongoing monsoon season.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Authority warned that the strengthening weather system could trigger flash floods in mountainous regions and landslides across northern Pakistan. Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Jammu and Kashmir remain among the most vulnerable areas, where continuous rainfall may disrupt transport, damage infrastructure and threaten local communities.

Furthermore, NDMA officials confirmed that all necessary preparations have been completed to respond quickly to any weather-related emergency. An Emergency Response Committee has been established to ensure coordinated action, while consultations with Provincial Disaster Management Authorities and other relevant institutions continue to strengthen preparedness before conditions worsen.

Officials also stated that disaster mapping, risk assessments and stocktaking exercises have already been completed to improve emergency planning across the country. In addition, emergency supplies have been positioned at the provincial level, and NDMA teams will soon visit different provinces to coordinate preparedness efforts with local administrations and ensure effective disaster response.

Authorities have urged residents, especially those living in mountainous and low-lying areas, to remain alert throughout the current monsoon spell and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall. They also advised the public to closely follow official weather updates and safety instructions, as timely precautions can reduce risks and help protect lives and property.
