The activists were stopped by Israeli naval forces on Wednesday while attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza Strip. In the video, officers are seen restraining activists on the ground as Ben-Gvir walks past carrying an Israeli flag and taunts those being detained.
The footage sparked condemnation from several Western governments, including Italy, Spain, France and Britain, which criticised the treatment of the activists and called for respect for human rights and dignity. Poland’s foreign minister also called for Ben-Gvir to be barred from entering the country.
The controversy also drew criticism from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said the minister’s conduct did not reflect Israel’s values. US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee described the video as damaging to Israel’s national dignity.
Rights group Adalah alleged that several activists faced abuse during detention, including beatings, taser use and degrading treatment. Two Italian activists claimed they were physically assaulted after being taken into custody. Israeli prison authorities denied the allegations, insisting detainees were treated according to the law.
The flotilla’s organisers said the mission aimed to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza and deliver humanitarian assistance following months of conflict in the territory. The activists, who included citizens from several countries, were later deported.
