Pakistan issues nationwide alert as storms, hail approach

Published on: May 15, 2026 5:54 PM

National Disaster Management Authority has issued a nationwide weather alert warning of strong winds, thunderstorms and hail expected across multiple regions within the next 12 to 24 hours. Authorities have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and remain cautious, especially in mountainous and vulnerable areas where weather conditions may turn severe.

According to the advisory, rain accompanied by strong winds and hail is likely in Islamabad and several districts of Punjab over the coming hours. Moreover, similar weather activity is expected in parts of Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, where changing conditions could affect road travel and local transportation networks.

In addition, the alert extends to multiple districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh and Balochistan, where thunderstorms and hail may occur at scattered locations. Officials warned that unstable weather patterns could disrupt daily life and increase risks for people living in exposed or remote areas across the country.

Meanwhile, the NDMA also highlighted the growing threat of flash floods and landslides in northern regions due to rising temperatures and accelerated glacier melting. Authorities explained that glacial lake outburst floods could develop if water pressure increases in vulnerable areas, creating sudden and dangerous flooding events downstream.

Furthermore, strong winds combined with hailstorms may damage weak structures, vehicles and solar panels, particularly in southern regions where infrastructure may not withstand severe weather conditions. Rainfall in hilly and mountainous zones could also create travel difficulties, road blockages and delays in emergency response operations.

Therefore, officials have strongly advised citizens to avoid travel near glacial lakes and stay away from unstable slopes during the expected weather spell. The authority emphasized that precautionary measures are essential to reduce the risk of accidents, property damage and loss of life as severe weather conditions spread across different parts of the country.
