Russia begins nuclear-capable missile tests

Published on: May 6, 2026 8:54 PM

Russia has begun test launches of missiles with nuclear capability at the Kura training ground in the Kamchatka region. The exercises come amid heightened global tensions and are scheduled to continue until May 10. The drills involve strategic weapons testing and military readiness operations.

According to regional authorities, the tests are being conducted at a key Russian Aerospace Forces facility. The Kura range is commonly used for missile target practice and intercontinental ballistic missile testing. Officials warned residents to avoid the area and follow strict safety measures during the exercises. Movement of people and equipment near the site has been fully restricted.

The facility plays a long-standing role in Russia’s strategic weapons program. It has been used since the Soviet era to receive warheads from long-range missile tests launched from other bases. These include launches from Plesetsk Cosmodrome and Kapustin Yar. Regular drills are conducted several times a year for training and evaluation purposes.

Authorities stated that the current exercises include both scheduled tests and training launches. The Strategic Missile Forces are involved in operational readiness drills during this period. The announcement did not specify the exact types of missiles being tested. However, officials confirmed they include nuclear-capable systems.

The drills come at a time of increased geopolitical uncertainty, with multiple global tensions unfolding simultaneously. Military analysts view such exercises as a demonstration of strategic capability and preparedness. The tests are expected to conclude as scheduled on May 10.
