Pakistan, China sign MoUs in water, agriculture and tea sectors

Pakistan and China have signed three memorandums of understanding (MoUs) to expand cooperation in key development sectors, including seawater desalination, agricultural technology, and the tea industry, as both countries seek to deepen economic and technical ties.

The agreements were signed on Monday during President Asif Ali Zardari’s ongoing visit to China, where he is scheduled to remain until May 1. According to official statements, the president witnessed the signing ceremonies involving Pakistani and Chinese institutions in Hunan province.

The first MoU was signed between the Sindh local government and Lucion Environmental Technology Group for a seawater desalination project in Karachi. The initiative aims to address the city’s long-standing water shortages by increasing supply through modern desalination technology. Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon signed the agreement on behalf of the provincial government.

The second agreement was signed between the Sindh local government and Long Ping Hi-tech Information Company to enhance cooperation in agricultural technology. The partnership focuses on improving farming practices through research, innovation, and the use of modern agricultural tools to increase productivity in Pakistan’s agriculture sector.

The third MoU involved Meskay & Femtee Trading Company of Pakistan and Chinese firms Hunan Tea Group and Jiaolong International Technology. The agreement aims to promote collaboration in tea production, processing, and trade, with an emphasis on strengthening bilateral economic and people-to-people exchanges.

Several senior officials, including Senator Saleem Mandviwalla, Sindh Chief Secretary Syed Asif Hyder Shah, and Pakistan’s Ambassador to China Khalil Hashmi, attended the signing ceremony.

In addition to the MoUs, President Zardari also conferred the Sitara-i-Pakistan award on Chinese Professor Pan Xiangbin in recognition of his contributions to cardiac care and training of medical professionals.

The developments reflect ongoing efforts by Pakistan and China to expand cooperation under their strategic partnership, particularly in areas linked to infrastructure, agriculture, and human development.
