Canadian tourist killed, several injured in Mexico pyramid attack

Published on: April 23, 2026 10:45 PM

A violent shooting at the historic Teotihuacan Archaeological Site in Mexico left a Canadian tourist dead and 13 others injured, shocking visitors at one of the country’s most visited heritage landmarks. The attack unfolded at the Pyramid of the Moon, where tourists were exploring the ancient site during daytime hours.

Authorities confirmed that a gunman opened fire at the popular tourist destination before later taking his own life at the scene. Officials said the attacker’s nationality remains unknown, and security forces quickly evacuated visitors while emergency teams responded to the chaotic situation.

Among the injured were citizens from multiple countries, including Canada, Colombia, Brazil, the United States, and Russia, highlighting the international nature of the tourist site. Six victims were directly injured by gunfire, while seven others suffered injuries during the panic and rush to escape the area.

Security officials recovered a firearm, a knife, and unused ammunition from the scene, indicating the attacker was heavily armed. Law enforcement agencies and the national guard immediately cordoned off the area and launched an investigation into the incident at the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The attack disrupted what is usually a peaceful and heavily visited location, known for attracting millions of tourists annually to its ancient pyramids and historical structures. The site, located near Mexico City, is one of the most important archaeological attractions in Latin America.

Following the incident, officials from Canada and Mexico condemned the violence and called for a thorough investigation. As preparations continue for upcoming global events, including the FIFA World Cup, authorities are now reviewing security measures at major tourist destinations across the country.
