Meta announces major layoffs amid AI restructuring push

Published on: April 20, 2026 6:36 PM

Meta Platforms has announced a major workforce reduction plan targeting around 8,000 employees as part of a broad restructuring strategy focused on artificial intelligence expansion and operational efficiency. The company confirmed that the layoffs will begin from May 20 and represent roughly 10 percent of its global workforce, with further reductions expected later in 2026. Management described the move as necessary to realign resources toward high priority AI infrastructure and long term technological transformation goals across all divisions.

The restructuring comes as Meta significantly increases its capital investment in artificial intelligence systems, allocating between 115 billion and 135 billion dollars for infrastructure development in 2025. Company officials said the shift reflects a strategic pivot toward AI driven products and services, which require substantial computing power and specialized engineering talent. Consequently, traditional roles across multiple departments are being reassessed to support this new operational direction and evolving business priorities in competitive global tech markets.

Job cuts will mainly affect several divisions including Reality Labs, Facebook social units, recruiting teams, sales departments, and global operations functions. In addition, roles such as general staff, engineers, developers, VR game studio employees, designers, recruiters, and sales operation personnel face increased risk under the restructuring framework. However, FAIR researchers and certain applied AI engineers will remain unaffected, while some employees in corporate support roles may also face reassignment or elimination based on performance evaluations.

Internal filings under California labor regulations indicate specific office level reductions, including 124 positions in Burlingame starting May 22 and 74 positions in Sunnyvale beginning May 29. These localized layoffs reflect a broader reorganization strategy rather than isolated workforce adjustments, signaling a company wide structural transformation. Meta leadership has already reduced more than 25,000 jobs since 2022, highlighting continued workforce optimization under CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s long term restructuring approach across global operations.

The latest round of layoffs differs from earlier pandemic related job cuts, as it focuses primarily on repositioning the company for an AI centered future rather than correcting overhiring trends. Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, appointed in 2025, is overseeing key decisions related to restructuring and workforce realignment across departments. Meta is also introducing new job classifications such as AI builder and AI podlead, reflecting a shift toward specialized artificial intelligence driven roles within its corporate structure.

Analysts note that Meta’s restructuring reflects a wider trend across the technology sector where companies are prioritizing artificial intelligence integration over traditional operational models. While the layoffs signal short term workforce disruption, the company argues that long term competitiveness depends on faster AI adoption and streamlined organizational structures. Consequently, employees and investors are closely monitoring how effectively Meta transitions toward its new AI focused strategy in an increasingly competitive global technology landscape.
