Iran sets clear red lines while keeping negotiations open

Published on: April 20, 2026 3:51 PM

Iran has stated that it will continue diplomatic negotiations but will not compromise on its defined national limits, according to senior parliamentary security official Ebrahim Azizi. The statement reflects Tehran’s effort to balance diplomacy with firm political conditions during ongoing regional discussions. Officials emphasized that negotiations remain possible, yet participation will depend on whether other parties respect Iran’s clearly stated boundaries. Consequently, the country aims to protect its strategic interests while maintaining dialogue channels.

Speaking during an interview with Al Jazeera, Azizi explained that negotiations do not mean Iran is prepared to enter talks under any circumstances or conditions. Instead, he stressed that the government has already outlined its red lines and expects all negotiating partners to respect them. Furthermore, he clarified that meaningful progress in diplomatic discussions depends on mutual understanding and constructive engagement from all sides.

Meanwhile, Azizi highlighted that Iran’s participation in the ongoing Islamabad Talks will largely depend on the behaviour and approach of the United States negotiating team. According to him, Tehran is closely monitoring signals from Washington before deciding the extent of its involvement. Therefore, positive diplomatic gestures from the American side could influence the direction and pace of future negotiations.

In addition, the Iranian official outlined several key conditions that Tehran believes must be addressed before negotiations can move forward in a meaningful way. Among these demands are a ceasefire in Lebanon and the restoration of Iran’s frozen financial assets held abroad. These issues, he explained, remain central to Iran’s position during the current diplomatic discussions and negotiations.

Azizi also warned that failure by the United States and Israel to respect these conditions could lead to serious consequences in regional relations. He emphasized that Iran expects clear signs of commitment from both countries before deepening negotiations. Consequently, Tehran continues to assess whether its strategic concerns are being taken seriously during ongoing diplomatic engagements.

Furthermore, the parliamentary security chief noted that previous international commitments must be honoured to maintain trust between negotiating parties. If earlier agreements remain unfulfilled, it would indicate that Iran’s conditions have not been genuinely accepted. Therefore, Tehran insists that credibility and accountability must guide all future diplomatic efforts and agreements between the involved nations.
