Pakistan to finalise US Iran talks schedule after PM returns

Published on: April 16, 2026 11:30 AM

Islamabad has informed both Iran and the United States (US) that the final schedule for the second round of mediation talks will be announced after Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif returns from his ongoing foreign visit, official sources said on Thursday.

According to diplomatic sources, both Tehran and Washington have agreed in principle to continue the dialogue process through the same delegations that participated in the first round of discussions held earlier in Islamabad. The continuity of the negotiating teams is being seen as an effort to maintain momentum in the fragile diplomatic process.

Officials familiar with the matter said the second phase of talks is expected to begin next week in Islamabad, depending on the prime minister’s return and final clearance from the political leadership. Pakistan has been playing a facilitating role in bringing both sides to the table amid heightened tensions in the Middle East.

Sources added that preliminary understandings from the first round of talks remain on the table, and both parties have shown willingness to resume discussions without changing the structure of the dialogue framework. However, the exact agenda for the upcoming round has not yet been formally shared.

The development comes as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is currently on a regional diplomatic tour covering Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Türkiye, where he is holding meetings with senior leadership and discussing regional peace and security.

Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts have intensified in recent weeks as the Middle East situation has evolved, with Islamabad positioning itself as a facilitator of dialogue between major global and regional actors.

Officials say the government believes continuity and timing are critical for the success of the process, and therefore the announcement of the next round will be aligned with the prime minister’s return to ensure coordinated messaging and diplomatic clarity.

Further details regarding venue, agenda, and participating delegations are expected to be released once the final approval is given in Islamabad.
