Pakistan praised for role as US-Iran conflict de-escalates: Shehbaz

Published on: April 8, 2026 11:25 PM

Islamabad: Pakistan played a key role in calming tensions between the United States and Iran, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said Wednesday. He highlighted that Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts received global recognition and helped prevent further escalation. The announcement follows a successful ceasefire that de-escalated what could have been a major regional conflict.

Speaking at a cabinet meeting, Shahbaz Sharif said Pakistan showed exceptional unity between its political and military leadership. He noted that international media widely praised Pakistan’s efforts in facilitating peace. The Prime Minister emphasized that the country contributed significantly to the safety of Muslim nations and regional stability.

Shahbaz Sharif further stated that President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on countries supplying military support to Iran, including a 50 percent levy on arms shipments. He explained that these measures would be applied immediately to all relevant US exports, with no exceptions, reflecting the effectiveness of Pakistan’s diplomatic intervention.

The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to countries supporting Pakistan’s peace efforts, including China, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Turkey, Indonesia, Egypt, Azerbaijan, and the UAE. He also acknowledged Pakistan’s own leadership, highlighting the efforts of the military, particularly field marshals and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, for working tirelessly to stabilize the situation.

Shahbaz Sharif said the flames of war have been extinguished for at least two weeks and hoped for a permanent resolution. He praised both Iranian and American leadership for cooperating with Pakistan and said the nation’s global reputation and respect have increased. He concluded that this diplomatic achievement reflects the collective efforts of the entire country, not just a single individual.
