ISLAMABAD – The Government of Pakistan has finalized a technology-driven petrol subsidy program aimed at providing targeted relief to low-income consumers affected by rising global fuel prices. The initiative uses a dedicated mobile application to ensure subsidies reach motorcyclists, rickshaw drivers, and other vulnerable commuters, moving away from blanket subsidies that often benefited higher-income groups.

The scheme, developed jointly by the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Information Technology, and the National Information Technology Board (NITB), allows users to register and track their fuel allocations digitally. Eligible beneficiaries will receive a monthly petrol quota of 20 to 30 liters at a subsidized rate, with additional purchases charged at standard market rates.

Registration for the Punjab Petrol Relief Package will be available starting April 4, 2026, through three channels: a dedicated helpline (1000), the mobile app “Maryam ko Batayn,” or the official web portal at mkb.punjab.gov.pk. To facilitate the rollout, the NITB has procured 24,000 mobile devices to be installed at approximately 12,000 designated petrol pumps nationwide, each equipped with two dedicated subsidized fuel nozzles.
In addition to the fuel subsidy, the Punjab government has announced that motorbike registration and ownership transfer fees will be waived province-wide. This relief measure is intended to support everyday commuters and small-scale vehicle owners struggling with rising transportation costs.
Officials emphasized that the app ensures transparency and efficiency, helping save billions of rupees previously lost in broad subsidy programs. A senior Ministry of Finance official stated, “By using the Petrol Subsidy App, every rupee spent by the state reaches the common man directly. This model will guide future social safety net programs.”
