Seoul: K-pop supergroup BTS made a long-awaited return to the stage on Saturday, performing their first concert in more than three years before tens of thousands of fans in the capital.
The hour-long outdoor show at Gwanghwamun Square marked the group’s official comeback following a hiatus that began in 2022, when members paused activities to complete mandatory military service. The concert came a day after the release of their new album, which their label said sold nearly four million copies within 24 hours.

Authorities had prepared for a massive turnout, shutting down parts of central Seoul and installing extensive safety measures. While 22,000 fans secured tickets for the inner viewing area, officials had expected crowds of up to 260,000 in surrounding spaces. However, attendance was significantly lower, with estimates placing the total turnout between 40,000 and 42,000.
Fans worldwide were able to watch the performance via a live broadcast on Netflix, which streamed the event across 190 countries, reflecting BTS’s continued global reach.
During the concert, leader Kim Nam-joon performed while seated due to an ankle injury sustained during rehearsals. Addressing fans, he expressed relief at returning to the stage after a long break. Member Jung Ho-seok also shared concerns the group had about being forgotten during their hiatus.
