MOUNT MAUNGANUI — A rejuvenated South African side dominated New Zealand in the first T20 International on Sunday, securing a seven-wicket victory with 20 balls to spare at Mount Maunganui’s Bay Oval.

New Zealand’s batting lineup collapsed under pressure from South Africa’s new-look pace attack, managing just 91 runs in 14.3 overs — their 10th lowest T20 total. The visitors’ seamers wreaked havoc, reducing the World Cup finalists to 36-5 early in the innings. Teenager Nqobani Mokoena was the star with the ball, claiming 3-26 in his 3.3 overs and dismantling the tail. Fellow pacemen Gerald Coetzee and Ottneil Baartman took two wickets each, while captain and spinner Keshav Maharaj chipped in with two more.

Chasing a modest target, South Africa reached 93-3 in 16.4 overs. Opener Connor Esterhuizen led the charge, remaining unbeaten on 45 off 48 balls, while debutants Rubin Hermann and Dian Forrester contributed vital lower-order runs. This match marked international debuts for four players in any format, including Esterhuizen, Hermann, Forrester, and Mokoena.
The New Zealand side, largely rested after their T20 World Cup final loss to India last week, relied only on captain Mitchell Santner and all-rounder Jimmy Neesham, both of whom tried to stabilize the innings but were unable to prevent a batting collapse. Neesham top-scored with 26 before falling to Mokoena.
