Maryam Nawaz orders work-from-home for Punjab officials

Published on: March 9, 2026 7:45 PM

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has suspended official fuel for provincial ministers and cut fuel allowances for government officers by 50 percent. She also ordered a work-from-home policy for government offices. The measures aim to manage economic pressures caused by the ongoing petroleum crisis, affecting ministers, officials, and government employees across Punjab.

In a provincial cabinet meeting, Maryam Nawaz also banned protocol vehicles accompanying ministers and senior officials. Only one vehicle will be allowed for unavoidable security needs. The decision intends to conserve fuel and reduce unnecessary government travel during the crisis.

The chief minister directed schools, colleges, and universities to remain closed from March 10 to March 31. Examinations will continue as scheduled, and educational institutions may conduct online classes to maintain learning continuity.

Maryam Nawaz said citizen services under initiatives like “Maryam Ki Dastak” and e-business platforms will continue. Government work will proceed via online meetings and teleconferences, while outdoor events, including the cultural horse and cattle show, have been postponed.

She also announced district-level petroleum monitoring committees and a “track and trace” system for fuel management. The public has been urged to avoid outdoor functions, late-night shopping, hoarding, and non-essential purchases during the crisis. The chief minister praised Shahbaz Sharif and Asim Munir for decisive action while warning exploiters of the crisis that authorities will act firmly.
