Punjab has approved the construction of 358 underground water storage tanks to improve rainwater management and strengthen groundwater levels across the province. The decision aims to modernize drainage systems, reduce urban flooding, and support long-term water conservation efforts through structured infrastructure planning.
The approval came during a special review meeting chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, where officials discussed development projects, clean water initiatives, and the Model Village Project. Moreover, authorities presented progress reports to ensure transparency and effective implementation of ongoing schemes.

Under the plan, 34 large underground tanks will be built in urban areas to ensure timely rainwater drainage during heavy rainfall. In addition, 324 roadside tanks will be installed to quickly remove water accumulated on streets, preventing traffic disruption and reducing flood-related damage in cities.
Furthermore, recharge wells will be constructed alongside the tanks to restore groundwater reserves, while stored water will be treated at water treatment plants for irrigation purposes. Authorities also announced plans to establish 328 wastewater treatment plants across the province to improve sanitation and promote sustainable water reuse.

In addition to water infrastructure, the meeting reviewed extensive development targets, including paving 6,100 kilometres of streets and laying 3,498 kilometres of sewerage lines. Officials also plan to install 14,679 streetlights and lay 33 million square feet of tuff tiles to enhance urban and rural infrastructure.
To support these initiatives, the government will deploy 526 modern machines and tractors for improved municipal services and drainage work. Meanwhile, a newly established sewerage pipeline factory in Lahore will soon begin production of long-lasting pipelines designed to improve system durability and service life across Punjab.
