FM Dar, Iran’s Araghchi discuss regional tensions

Published on: March 6, 2026 11:49 PM

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held a phone call with Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi on Friday, expressing concern over the evolving regional situation. Both leaders agreed to maintain contact as the Middle East conflict continues following US and Israeli airstrikes that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior officials. Tehran responded with retaliatory attacks on US military bases in Gulf countries, expanding the confrontation.

FM Dar highlighted Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to promote de-escalation between Washington and Tehran through diplomatic channels and backchannel contacts. He described the recent coordinated US-Israel strikes as sudden and concerning, noting that Pakistan had previously engaged with multiple countries to persuade all parties to return to dialogue. The foreign minister stressed that dialogue remains the key to achieving understanding and stability in the region.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office said the discussion reaffirmed both sides’ commitment to staying in touch regarding developments. Dar emphasized that Pakistan views Iran as a neighbouring and brotherly Muslim country and condemned the attacks on February 28 as part of its initial reaction to the crisis.

Addressing the Senate earlier, Dar noted that diplomatic engagement between the US and Iran had been moving positively before the recent escalation. He referenced Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recent Austria visit, where Pakistani officials met with IAEA Director Rafael Grossi, who expressed optimism that dialogue could continue constructively.
