Power shift in Tehran: Mojtaba Khamenei reportedly chosen

Published on: March 4, 2026 3:08 PM

Israeli media outlets have reported that Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of Ali Khamenei, has been selected as Iran’s new Supreme Leader. According to these reports, a committee responsible for choosing the country’s top authority approved his name and may announce the decision within hours. However, Iranian officials have not yet issued formal confirmation of the claim. The reported development has drawn strong attention across the region due to its political significance.

Meanwhile, Iranian media outlets have offered a different account, stating that discussions about the next Supreme Leader are still ongoing and no final decision has been reached. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has indicated that the selection process could take approximately one week before authorities finalize any announcement. In addition, state media has suggested that officials may wait until after funeral proceedings for Ali Khamenei before declaring a successor. These conflicting narratives have increased uncertainty surrounding the leadership transition.

Mojtaba Khamenei has long been considered an influential figure within Iran’s political and security circles, despite holding no major public office. He reportedly participated in the Iran-Iraq War and later built strong connections with senior clerics and military leaders. Following the disputed 2009 presidential elections, critics alleged that he played a role in influencing forces involved in suppressing nationwide protests. Although he rarely appears in public, analysts frequently describe him as a powerful behind-the-scenes actor.

Born in 1969 in Mashhad, Mojtaba spent part of his early childhood in the northwestern cities of Sardasht and Mahabad before continuing his religious education. In 2004, he married Zahra Haddad Adel, strengthening ties with prominent clerical families within Iran’s establishment. Politically, he has been associated with support for former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during key periods of internal political change. His alignment with conservative factions has shaped public perceptions of his potential leadership approach.

Furthermore, the United States imposed sanctions on Mojtaba Khamenei in 2019, citing concerns about his role within Iran’s political structure and regional strategy. If authorities confirm his appointment, the decision could influence Iran’s domestic policies and its relations with Western and regional powers. Observers are closely monitoring developments as the country navigates a sensitive and historic transition. Until Tehran issues an official statement, uncertainty will continue to surround the reported succession.
