Khamenei alive, officials safe, Iran seeks de-escalation

Published on: February 28, 2026 9:30 PM

Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that supreme leader Ali Khamenei and all high-ranking officials are alive following US and Israeli strikes across Iran on Saturday. He emphasized that Tehran’s leadership remains fully operational and unharmed.

In an interview with NBC News from Tehran, Araghchi explained that Iran has been in contact with Gulf states. He clarified that Iran does not intend to attack Gulf countries, focusing only on American bases for self-defense purposes. The minister stressed the country’s defensive posture amid escalating tensions.

Araghchi also stated that there is currently no direct communication with Washington. However, he said the US knows how to reach him if dialogue is desired. He emphasized that Tehran is “certainly interested in de-escalation” to reduce regional tensions and prevent further conflict.

The statement comes after coordinated US and Israeli strikes on multiple Iranian cities, which had raised fears of a broader regional confrontation. Araghchi’s remarks aim to reassure neighboring countries while signaling Iran’s readiness for diplomatic engagement. Analysts suggest that Iran’s stance could influence Gulf security dynamics in the coming days.

Observers note that the emphasis on self-defense and de-escalation may help prevent further escalation. Regional governments are closely monitoring the situation, while international diplomatic channels remain alert. Iran’s statements indicate a possible path toward dialogue if tensions continue to rise.
