Israel confirms strikes on Tehran

Published on: February 28, 2026 1:06 PM

Israel says it has launched attack on Iran, as explosions reported in Tehran - BBC News
Israel has launched strikes on Iran, with explosions reported in the Iranian capital late Tuesday night, according to Iranian media.

Reports from Tehran said loud blasts were heard in multiple parts of the city, while thick plumes of smoke were seen rising into the night sky. Iranian outlets stated that several missiles landed near University Road and in the Jomhouri area of the capital. Emergency services were reportedly deployed as authorities assessed the damage in the affected neighborhoods.

The Israeli defense minister confirmed the operation, saying that Israel had carried out strikes on Tehran and initiated what he described as pre-emptive attacks. He did not immediately provide further operational details but indicated that the action was taken in response to perceived security threats.

Following the announcement, Israeli authorities implemented emergency measures nationwide. Schools across the country were closed, citizens were advised to work from home, and public gatherings were temporarily banned. Air raid sirens were also reported in Jerusalem, signaling heightened alert levels amid fears of possible retaliation.

The developments mark a significant escalation in tensions between Israel and Iran, whose rivalry has intensified in recent years through proxy conflicts and direct threats. Analysts warn that the latest strikes could trigger a broader regional confrontation if diplomatic channels fail to contain the situation.

Iranian officials have yet to release an official statement detailing casualties or the extent of the damage. Meanwhile, international observers are closely monitoring the unfolding events, as global powers call for restraint to prevent further destabilization in the Middle East.

The situation remains fluid, with both sides on high alert amid growing uncertainty over the next phase of the conflict.
