Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in India on Friday to reset strained ties and boost trade between the two countries. The visit aims to more than double bilateral commerce and rebuild diplomatic trust. The outcome matters for businesses, investors, and communities affected by recent tensions.
Carney began his trip in Mumbai, where he is set to meet business leaders before heading to New Delhi. He will hold talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. India’s foreign ministry called the visit a significant step toward strengthening bilateral relations.

Relations collapsed in 2023 after Ottawa accused New Delhi of involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. India rejected the allegations, and both countries expelled senior diplomats in 2024. However, ties improved after Carney took office in 2025 and envoys were restored.
Now, both sides want to revive trade talks and deepen cooperation across key sectors. Discussions will focus on energy, technology, artificial intelligence, defense, and talent mobility. Carney has set a target to raise annual two-way trade to $51 billion by 2030.

Moreover, India seeks greater foreign investment as it expands nuclear energy capacity and critical mineral supply chains. Canada, meanwhile, aims to reduce reliance on the United States, its largest trading partner. After India, Carney will visit Australia and Japan as part of this broader economic pivot.
