The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) has made a three-credit-hour artificial intelligence (AI) course mandatory for all undergraduate and postgraduate programmes starting in 2026. The directive applies to both public and private universities, which must integrate the course into curricula immediately. HEC stressed that AI education is essential to equip students with knowledge and skills relevant to today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape.
The notification specifies that the AI course may be offered as an elective, interdisciplinary, or supporting subject within each degree programme. Universities are expected to design the curriculum to ensure students gain practical and theoretical understanding of AI applications in their fields. The move reflects Pakistan’s focus on preparing graduates for emerging global opportunities in technology.

HEC highlighted the growing importance of AI as a transformative force across industries, from healthcare and finance to engineering and education. Students completing the course will gain skills in problem-solving, data analysis, and the ethical use of AI technologies. Officials said this will enhance both academic performance and employability.
The commission urged higher education institutions to implement the course without delay and monitor progress to ensure quality standards are maintained. Faculty training and updated teaching resources will be necessary to deliver effective AI instruction across diverse degree programmes nationwide.
