PMD issues rain alert across Pakistan

Published on: July 6, 2026 6:19 PM

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Monday forecast widespread rain, windstorms, and thunderstorms across upper and central Pakistan until July 8. The weather agency warned that isolated heavy downpours could trigger urban flooding, flash floods, and landslides in vulnerable areas. Authorities and residents have been advised to remain alert as severe weather is expected to affect several major cities.

According to the PMD, moist currents from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, combined with an approaching westerly wave, will bring intermittent rainfall across Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, and northeastern Balochistan. Isolated showers are also expected in parts of Sindh during the forecast period. Weather conditions are likely to remain unstable through Tuesday.

The Met Office warned that heavy rainfall could cause urban flooding in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Nowshera, Gujranwala, Lahore, and Faisalabad. It also cautioned that flash floods and rising water levels in streams and hill torrents are possible in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and parts of Dera Ghazi Khan. Residents living in low-lying and mountainous areas have been urged to exercise caution.

The PMD further warned that strong winds and lightning could damage vulnerable infrastructure, including electricity poles, billboards, and solar panels. Farmers, tourists, and travellers have been advised to monitor weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall. Emergency preparedness has also been recommended in high-risk areas.

The weather department urged all relevant authorities to remain vigilant and implement precautionary measures throughout the forecast period. Rescue and disaster management agencies have been asked to stay prepared for any emergencies caused by heavy rain or strong winds. The advisory aims to reduce potential risks to life, property, and public infrastructure.
