Faisal Vawda warns against politicising counterterrorism operations

Faisal Vawda warns crackdown on foreign-backed anti-state elements

ISLAMABAD: Senator Faisal Vawda on Monday warned that any political party attempting to obstruct ongoing operations against militants would face strict consequences, emphasising that counterterrorism efforts must remain above political disputes.

Speaking outside Parliament House, Vawda highlighted the sacrifices of security forces, noting that military funerals were continuing while some politicians focused on criticism rather than supporting the nation. “At a time when forces are laying down their lives, political differences must not interfere with national security,” he said.

Vawda said terrorism required a clear and decisive strategy and added that any party trying to interfere in these operations would be “dealt with.” He referred to the recent unrest as the start of “Operation Sindoor II” and described it as part of a proxy war by India. Warning of broader consequences, he said that if conventional warfare broke out, Pakistan would respond with greater force, and any country providing territory against Pakistan would face action.

Turning to domestic politics, Vawda criticised divisions among political parties. While the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) canceled events and the Punjab government observed a day of mourning, he expressed disappointment that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) did not call off its protests. He described PTI’s strike call as largely unnoticed and termed current negotiations “more of a joke than serious talks.”

The senator urged political leaders to resolve internal disputes responsibly, including considering proposals from JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, whom he called a patriotic Pakistani. He also criticised politicians who amassed wealth despite humble beginnings, noting that many who once smoked bidis had now become billionaires.

Concluding his remarks, Faisal Vawda emphasised that meaningful negotiations were the only path to real change. He encouraged parties to adopt proper procedures and indicated that meetings with PTI founder Imran Khan could proceed if the right approach was followed.
