India captain Shubman Gill, sidelined for two months due to injury, is focusing on the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand. The first match will be played on Sunday in Vadodara. Gill sees the series as crucial preparation for next year’s 50-over World Cup and wants to evaluate players under match conditions.
The 26-year-old, named India’s 50-over captain in October 2025, has played only three T20 internationals since mid-November after sustaining a neck injury against South Africa. He described watching from the sidelines as “very frustrating” and said he is concentrating on recovery and readiness for competitive cricket. Gill emphasized building his form while assessing his team’s strengths and weaknesses ahead of major tournaments.

Gill highlighted the importance of experienced teammates, particularly Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, in stabilizing the side. “One is the greatest opener of all time in ODIs, and Virat bhai is one of the greatest ODI batters,” he said. Their presence, according to Gill, provides confidence and guidance to younger players, easing the responsibility on him as captain.
While Gill prepares for the ODI series, he acknowledged missing out on the upcoming T20 World Cup starting February 7 in India and Sri Lanka. He was not included in India’s 15-member squad, with Sanju Samson taking his place. Gill said he respects the selectors’ decision and wished the team success while remaining focused on his role in upcoming ODIs.

Gill concluded that setbacks are part of a professional career. “A player always believes he will try his best for the country, and selectors’ decisions are part of the journey,” he said. He expressed determination to return stronger and lead India effectively in the World Cup series.
