Yasmin Rashid appeals May 9 convictions in LHC

Published on: January 9, 2026 4:36 PM

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Dr. Yasmin Rashid has filed appeals in the Lahore High Court challenging her convictions in three separate May 9 cases. The appeals were submitted on Friday through her lawyer, Rana Muddassar Umar, who argued that the trial was rushed and did not adhere to proper legal procedures.

Rashid contended that the trial court hastily issued sentences without thoroughly reviewing the facts or evidence of the cases. She urged the high court to declare the convictions null and void, citing violations of the principles of justice during the expedited proceedings.

In her petition, the PTI leader requested that her sentences be suspended until the high court delivers a final verdict on the appeals. The suspension, she argued, is necessary to ensure fairness and uphold the rule of law while the appeals are under consideration.

The convictions relate to protests held on May 9, which led to legal cases filed against PTI leaders at the Gulberg, Racecourse, and Nasirabad police stations. Dr. Yasmin Rashid’s legal team stressed that the charges were politically motivated and that proper judicial procedure was not followed in the lower courts.

The Lahore High Court will review the petitions and decide whether to grant the suspension of sentences during the appeals process. Political analysts note that these appeals are part of broader legal challenges faced by PTI leaders connected to the May 9 demonstrations.

Supporters of Dr. Rashid have called for a fair hearing, emphasizing that no individual should face expedited trials without full consideration of evidence. The case is likely to draw significant public attention given its political sensitivity and the prominence of the leader involved.
