Oman updates citizenship application process and fees for 2026

Published on: January 6, 2026 2:27 PM

Muscat: Oman’s Ministry of Interior has announced updated regulations and fees for citizenship applications in 2026, following a ministerial decision issued by Sayyid Hamoud bin Faisal Al Busaidi, according to Oman Observer. The regulations, based on a Royal Decree, outline procedures for obtaining, renouncing, or restoring Omani nationality.

Under the new rules, applicants seeking citizenship through naturalisation must pay a fee of 600 Omani Rial. Reduced fees of 300 Rial apply to foreign women married to Omani citizens, or to widows or divorcees of Omanis. All applications must be submitted to the relevant department’s designated office for review.

Applicants for Omani nationality or its restoration are required to appear in person for mandatory assessments, including Arabic language tests. All documents must be submitted in Arabic, and the department verifies the applicant’s eligibility and adherence to legal requirements.

Individuals wishing to renounce Omani nationality must submit proof of obtaining another citizenship or official confirmation from the relevant country. Restoration of nationality is also possible for those who previously renounced it, provided they have resided in Oman for at least two years and can demonstrate formal renunciation of the foreign citizenship.

Special provisions apply to foreign women married to Omani citizens. To qualify, the marriage must have been approved by the Ministry of Interior where legally required. The applicant must have lived with her Omani husband in Oman for at least ten years and must have an Omani son. Additionally, good conduct and a clean criminal record are mandatory.

The updated regulations aim to streamline the application process while maintaining national standards for eligibility. Applicants are advised to carefully review all requirements and submit complete documentation to avoid delays.
