Russian air strikes on Kyiv kill two civilians, damage hospital

Published on: January 5, 2026 3:02 PM

An overnight Russian air attack on Kyiv and surrounding areas killed two civilians, Ukrainian authorities said on Monday, marking the first reported deaths in the capital from Russian strikes this year. The attack set a private medical facility ablaze in Kyiv’s northern Obolonskyi district, where an inpatient ward was in operation.

Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said that after the fire was extinguished, one body was found inside the building. A woman was injured and 25 people were evacuated from the hospital during the emergency response, the service added on its Telegram account.

Nighttime photos released by authorities showed emergency responders carrying a body on a stretcher past an ambulance outside the snow-covered building. The strike was part of a broader attack on towns and villages across the Kyiv region, causing damage to homes and critical infrastructure.

A civilian was also killed in the Fastiv district, southwest of Kyiv, according to Mykola Kalashnyk, governor of the region. He added that some parts of the region were left without electricity as a result of the strikes.

There was no immediate comment from Russia regarding the attacks. Both sides have repeatedly denied targeting civilians, even as Ukraine reports that civilians and civilian infrastructure are often affected during Russia’s missile and drone campaigns.

Russia has frequently carried out air strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities during the nearly four-year conflict, asserting that military targets are its focus. Ukraine continues to document damage to hospitals, residential areas, and other non-military sites, highlighting the human toll of the ongoing war.

The attack underscores the continued vulnerability of civilians in and around Kyiv and the broader humanitarian risks posed by the conflict. Authorities said emergency and rescue teams remain on high alert as they respond to the aftermath of the strikes.
