Snowfall, rain intensify winter chill in Murree, twin cities

Published on: January 2, 2026 10:06 AM

Snowfall in Murree and widespread rain in Rawalpindi and Islamabad caused a noticeable drop in temperatures on Thursday, intensifying the winter chill across the region. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast a further decline in temperatures in the coming days.

Murree recorded around four inches of snowfall, while weather conditions are expected to improve on Friday. The snowfall disrupted routine life in upper areas but also attracted tourists seeking winter scenery.

In Islamabad, the highest rainfall of 27 millimetres was recorded in Saidpur, followed by 23mm at Zero Point, 16mm at Bokra, and 12mm at Golra. Rawalpindi received 24mm of rain at Shamsabad, 20mm at New Katarian, 17mm at Gawalmandi, 16mm at Katcheri, 12mm at Pirwadhai, and 17mm at other localities.

Despite the rain, temperatures in the twin cities hovered around six degrees Celsius due to cloud cover. A Met Office official said Islamabad and Rawalpindi typically experience near-freezing temperatures during December and January, but clouds temporarily kept readings slightly higher.

The official said temperatures were expected to drop further as cold air from surrounding hilly regions moved into the plains. Continental air was prevailing over most parts of the country, while a westerly weather system was affecting Kashmir and nearby areas.

Cold and dry weather is expected across much of the country, with very cold conditions likely in upper hilly regions during mornings and nights. The Met Office also warned of moderate to dense fog in plain areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and upper Sindh.

Meanwhile, the Murree district administration took precautionary measures by sprinkling salt on major roads to prevent accidents. Deputy Commissioner Agha Zaheer Abbas Shirazi visited several snowfall-affected areas to review arrangements and ensure smooth traffic flow.

Tourists were advised to remain cautious, ensure vehicles were in good condition and follow the traffic plan. Authorities said all departments remained on alert to facilitate visitors and manage the situation effectively.
