KARACHI: The Sindh government has decided to hand over Blue Lines Bus Rapid Transport System Project to another organisation, after refusal by Bahria Town Group ;Taha Farooqui, Secretary Transport Department Sindh has revealed. In this regard, an international tender will be invited in order to keep the job process transparent. Murad Ali Shah, Chief Minister (CM) Sindh has also given him affirmation in this regard. The Bahria Town administration after almost three years of planning on the Project has finally denied to carryout the job since they claim to have run out of funds needed for this project and also because of the conflict between Sindh government and Karachi Metropolitan Corporation over administrative powers, he informed. The period wasted in fruitless practice has escalated the project cost from Rs 34 billion to Rs 90 billion, Taha lamented. This Project would be placed in the next fiscal year for funds allocation under Special Project category. Under the new PC-I, Sindh government has reduced the distance of the BRT route from 54 kilometers (km) to 14 km. Earlier the route had been designed starting from from Defence Housing Authority City via Bahria Town to Merewether Clock Tower. After the revision, new route will have 14 km elevated route between Sohrab Goth to Guru Mandir. The estimated cost of the Project would be Rs 12 billion. This Project will be supervised by Sindh Mass Transit Authority (and in this connection SMTA has already put a presentation and has sent the papers to Planning Department for final approval. It is believed that Murad Ali Shah would convene a meeting of concerned officials and experts on the matter. Another option to complete the Project in shortest possible time, is that the FWO would probably be awarded direct tender by-passing Sindh Public Procurement Regulatory Authority laws by CM. “This step if taken it would be because of the reputation of FWO, since they are capable and have several development projects in the country with due responsibility”. It is pertinent to mention here that this Project had been awarded to Bahria Town Group on the sheer interest of Riaz Malik, Group Chairman during former CM Qaim Ali Shah on the instruction of former President Asif Ali Zardari. Sindh government is already working on 4.7 km long Orange Line BRTS project which is aimed to facilitate commuters of Orangi Town to Board of Secondary Education office North Nazimabad. The federal government has funded 22-km long Green Line BRTS project which is is underway from Surjani Town to Merewether Clock Tower. Moreover SMTA is already involved preparing paper work and possibility of revenue avenues for BRTS Red Line, Yellow Line and Brown Line projects.
