Stranger Things finale teases Steve Harrington’s fate

Published on: December 29, 2025 5:17 PM

As the highly anticipated Stranger Things finale approaches, fans are eagerly speculating about the fate of Steve Harrington, played by Joe Keery, who evolved from a self-absorbed teen in season one to a beloved, kind-hearted character in later seasons. The show’s creators, Ross and Matt Duffer, have addressed these concerns, hinting at potential surprises while reassuring viewers about the overall tone of the ending.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Duffer Brothers acknowledged that fans are always worried about Steve, with Ross noting that anxiety over his fate is inevitable, while Matt emphasized that the show is not comparable to extreme plot twists seen in Game of Thrones. They reassured fans that the finale aims for satisfaction rather than shocking or upsetting viewers unnecessarily.

Matt further teased that Steve’s journey has been physically challenging, and hinted that the next logical step for his character could involve life-threatening consequences, though he avoided revealing specifics, leaving fans both anxious and intrigued. The brothers emphasized that while surprising events will occur, the outcome is meant to feel inevitable and fitting within the story.

So far, no main character deaths have occurred in the fifth season’s volumes one and two, suggesting that the finale could bring high-stakes developments and possibly intense confrontations, heightening suspense as Hawkins’ residents face their ultimate challenges. Steve’s continued struggles position him at the heart of fan speculation and emotional investment in the series’ conclusion.
