The 35-year-old cited a long-standing rib injury as the main reason behind his decision, revealing that the persistent issue had prevented him from featuring for Central Districts during the current domestic season. After extended time away from the game, Bracewell said the injury ultimately prompted him to step aside.

Bracewell made his international debut for New Zealand in 2011 and went on to represent the Black Caps in all three formats. Over a 12-year international career, he featured in 28 Tests, 21 One-Day Internationals and 20 T20 Internationals, with his most recent appearance in a Test match coming in 2023.

His name remains firmly etched in New Zealand cricket history due to his memorable performance against Australia in Hobart in December 2011. Playing just his third Test, Bracewell produced extraordinary match figures of 9 for 60, helping New Zealand secure a landmark victory — their first Test win on Australian soil in 26 years and their most recent to date.

Across his Test career, the fast-medium bowler claimed 74 wickets at an average of 38.82, while adding a further 46 wickets in limited-overs internationals. He was also a regular presence in New Zealand’s domestic circuit, contributing with both bat and ball for Central Districts.

Reflecting on his journey, Bracewell described his career as a source of pride and gratitude. He said representing New Zealand had always been a childhood aspiration and a privilege he would cherish.

Doug Bracewell comes from one of New Zealand’s most renowned cricketing families. His father Brendon and uncle John both played Test cricket, while John later served multiple terms as national head coach. He also shared the international stage with his cousin Michael Bracewell, featuring together in two ODIs and a Test.
