Snowfall surprised residents in parts of Saudi Arabia and Qatar on Wednesday and Thursday, blanketing several northern regions and prompting widespread attention. The cold weather was accompanied by heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds in multiple cities across the Middle East, according to Khaleej Times and Arab News.

In Saudi Arabia, snow fell in Trojena, a mountain destination on Jebel Al-Lawz in Tabuk Province, which reaches altitudes of 2,600 metres. Other areas, including Bir Bin Hermas, Al-Ayinah, Al-Ula Governorate, Shaqra, and parts of Riyadh, experienced light to moderate rainfall. Riyadh schools shifted to remote learning as thick clouds and rain persisted.

The National Centre for Meteorology (NCM) reported that a cold air mass advancing into northern regions caused temperatures to drop below zero Celsius in some locations. Northern and central governorates, such as Al-Majmaah and Al-Ghat, saw snow accumulation in highland and open areas. Authorities urged caution, warning about icy roads and advising residents to stay updated on weather alerts.
Residents expressed excitement at witnessing the snowfall, describing it as a rare and memorable experience. Many gathered in northern towns to enjoy the winter conditions, while others, like families in Riyadh, adjusted plans due to gusty winds and dust-stirring conditions. The General Directorate of Civil Defence reminded people to avoid valleys and follow safety guidelines during the unusual weather.

Experts noted that while snowfall in Saudi Arabia is infrequent, it is not entirely unprecedented. Mohammed bin Reddah Al Thaqafi, a Saudi astronomer, explained that snow typically occurs between December and February in regions such as Tabuk, Al-Jouf, Arar, and Hail. Its occurrence depends on shifting atmospheric and climatic conditions, making certain northern highlands more prone to winter snow than other parts of the kingdom.

Authorities and experts emphasized public safety, advising motorists and outdoor visitors to be cautious of slippery roads, reduced visibility, and icy conditions, while encouraging adherence to traffic regulations and official weather updates.
