Section 144 extended in Rawalpindi amid security concerns

Published on: December 8, 2025 12:38 PM

Section 144 imposed in North Waziristan for one month

The District Administration of Rawalpindi has extended the enforcement of Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure until 10 December due to ongoing law and order concerns. The order, initially imposed by the deputy commissioner, restricts public gatherings of more than four individuals and bans rallies and political assemblies in the city. Officials stated that the measure is necessary to maintain peace and prevent any untoward incidents.

Heightened security arrangements have been put in place near Adiala Jail, including deployment of additional personnel inside and around the facility. Police checkpoints have been set up on major routes leading to the jail to monitor movement and ensure compliance with the restrictions. Authorities have urged residents and visitors to cooperate with law enforcement to guarantee public safety.

Section 144 empowers district administrations to issue orders in public interest, banning specific activities for a designated period. Violations are enforceable under Section 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Meanwhile, similar restrictions have been imposed in Karachi around all intermediate examination centers to prevent cheating and maintain exam transparency. The Section 144 enforcement in Karachi will remain in effect until 30 December, covering daily examinations scheduled from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Only candidates with verified admit cards and staff on duty will be allowed within the centers, while entry for unrelated persons is prohibited within a 200-yard radius of the sites.

Authorities emphasized that these steps are precautionary measures aimed at ensuring the safety of citizens and maintaining order during sensitive events and examinations. Both Rawalpindi and Karachi administrations continue to monitor situations closely and have called for public cooperation in following the restrictions.
