OpenAI data breach hits developers, ChatGPT safe

Published on: November 28, 2025 5:01 PM

A recent data breach involving OpenAI has exposed thousands of software developers’ emails, locations, and telemetry information, raising concerns about cybersecurity. However, regular ChatGPT users’ accounts remain unaffected by this incident.

The breach occurred at Mixpanel, a third-party analytics company partnered with OpenAI for its developer platform. Hackers accessed limited analytics data, but crucial personal information such as chat logs, passwords, API keys, and payment details were not compromised.

Specifically, the leaked data included the name associated with API accounts, email addresses, approximate user location, operating system, browser details, referring websites, and organization or user IDs linked to the API accounts.

OpenAI clarified that this incident does not involve its ChatGPT platform directly. Users interacting with ChatGPT remain secure, and the company emphasized that no government IDs, financial details, or chat content were exposed during the breach.

The AI company is actively contacting affected developers and monitoring for any potential misuse of the leaked information. OpenAI reassured the public that its systems remain safe and personal user data has not been compromised.

Authorities and OpenAI continue investigating the breach, and further details are expected as the probe unfolds. The company remains committed to improving security measures and protecting both developers and users in the future.
