Pakistan seeks clarity on US Gaza force plan

>UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has joined the Arab group at the United Nations in demanding greater clarity on the US-proposed Gaza Stabilisation Force, insisting that any Security Council resolution must also outline a clear “political horizon” for Palestinian self-determination and statehood.

“Pakistan supports the Arab position that the resolution must reaffirm the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, prevent further annexation, and ensure Gaza and the West Bank remain part of a unified, independent Palestinian state,” a senior diplomat said.

The move comes after China and Russia, both permanent members of the UN Security Council, broke the “silence period” on the US draft resolution, raising objections over the proposed International Stabilisation Force (ISF). They called for the ISF to operate strictly under UN supervision and criticised the absence of a clear mandate and accountability framework for the proposed Board of Peace (BOP).

The original US draft, known as Revision 1, integrates the “20-point” Trump peace plan and envisions a two-year Board of Peace, reportedly to be headed by former US president Donald Trump, to oversee reconstruction and disarmament efforts in Gaza. However, the proposal has met resistance from several countries. The UAE has expressed legal reservations, Jordan has refused troop deployment, and Azerbaijan has tied participation to a verified ceasefire — while Turkey was excluded at Israel’s request.

Even willing participants, including Indonesia and Pakistan, remain cautious. “No one wants to appear as a junior partner in an Israeli-led operation,” a diplomat remarked. Meanwhile, the World Bank has endorsed the US draft and pledged to manage Gaza’s reconstruction funds, estimated at around $70 billion. Despite these efforts, diplomats predict that internal divisions within the Security Council will delay the vote as Washington prepares a second revised draft next week.
