Cabinet meet on security, fresh Amendments to 27th bill expected

Published on: November 12, 2025 3:18 PM

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called an emergency meeting of the federal cabinet today. The session aims to review the worsening security situation in the country. According to officials, the meeting could take place at any time today. Cabinet members have been directed to stay available for urgent decisions. The government may also discuss new changes to the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill.

The cabinet will likely take important decisions related to national security and governance. Sources said several new proposals are under consideration. However, the official agenda has not yet been shared with members. The meeting comes as tensions rise following recent terror attacks. The government is seeking to strengthen its response to growing internal and external security challenges.

Meanwhile, the government has decided to introduce further amendments to the 27th Constitutional Amendment. These changes will be presented in the National Assembly soon. Both government and opposition lawmakers plan to move their own amendments. After the Assembly’s approval, the revised bill will return to the Senate. The federal cabinet’s approval will be required before it moves forward.

The opposition has announced 11 amendments against the bill. Their proposals mainly oppose changes to the higher judiciary’s structure and immunity clauses. Opposition leaders say the government is trying to centralize power. They argue that judicial independence must remain untouched. This disagreement is likely to spark heated debate in Parliament later today.

The meeting follows a deadly suicide bombing in Islamabad that killed 12 people and injured 27 others. Recent attacks have raised fears of renewed militancy from groups based in Afghanistan. Pakistan has blamed Afghan soil for harboring these networks. Diplomatic talks with the Afghan Taliban in Qatar and Turkey have failed to yield progress. Now, Islamabad faces growing pressure to act decisively while keeping regional stability intact.
