ISLAMABAD – The joint committee of the Senate and National Assembly on Law and Justice has rejected all four amendments proposed by the government’s coalition partners to the 27th Constitutional Amendment, sources confirmed.
During the meeting, the MQM’s proposed change to Article 140-A, which sought to enhance devolution of powers to local governments, was turned down. Similarly, the Balochistan Awami Party’s (BAP) proposal to increase the number of provincial seats was also rejected.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) amendment aimed at introducing a uniform national curriculum was dismissed, as was the Awami National Party’s (ANP) proposal to rename the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
Under the 27th Amendment as it stands, the President of Pakistan will receive lifelong immunity under Article 248, extending this protection to cover past cases as well. The rejection of coalition amendments clears the way for the government to push the amendment forward in parliament without further changes from partner parties.
