GILGIT — President Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday praised the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) for creating new opportunities in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), emphasizing the need for inclusive development across the region.
Speaking at a ceremony marking the 78th anniversary of GB’s liberation from Dogra rule, Zardari said, “The CPEC has brought new opportunities for livelihood, trade and connectivity to GB. Our collective task is to ensure that these opportunities reach every valley and every village, creating shared prosperity for all.”

The president also highlighted Pakistan’s support for the people of occupied Kashmir, stating that Pakistan stands with them until they can live in freedom in line with UN Security Council resolutions.
Zardari acknowledged the contributions of GB’s people over the past seven decades, praising their role in guarding borders and advancing national progress. He called the Karakoram Highway a “living memento” of Pakistan-China friendship and emphasized the region’s potential for hydroelectric power and tourism.

Highlighting education and healthcare as top priorities, Zardari said, “You should receive education, you should be healthy, and [in] every valley … there should be schools.” He also suggested the possibility of establishing a local airline to enhance connectivity.
He concluded by urging the people of GB to continue contributing to building a progressive and prosperous Pakistan.
